“Have a great trip.”
My father said these words.
Those were his last words to me.
At the time, I received them as a gentle send-off — the kind of warm, easy thing a father says when his child is moving toward something new. Affectionate. Brief. Already complete.
Two years later, I understand the itinerary.

Our father’s last year, for me, was filled with a huge smile on his face. I carry a photo of him onboard a boat in the Atlantic Ocean — a record I hold in the akashic register of his joy — next to my brother Omar, my sister Sameerah, my son Hamilton. And off in the distance, not very far from that smile, in the Atlantic Ocean, we would soon be watching dolphins and whales swim alongside the boat.
Being the dad that I Am, I can only imagine the omnidirectional joy in that smile — because of so many loves, and wants, and hopes, and desires, and dreams all coming together at the same time on those waters.
We had a great trip. Much love to Sameerah and Omar for the scale of your contributions to the radiance of that smile that you so lovingly co-authored with your intentions. That image is one of the most significantly radiant memories of Samuel Roland Harris that I know.
I was there to know it to have been a true part of his experience, and to delight in the joys of a dreamer in his 70s seeing a dream come true.

During the last year of my father’s life I did not see him much. I kept a distance because of COVID safety and hospital visits. We have lived in different states for most of my life, and have mostly stayed close through phone calls, voice notes, family holiday events, and what I believe to be a genuine energetic bond of presence and awareness.
This is challenging to describe yet I can genuinely say that my father has always been in my heart, as an energetic signature that I can appreciate. He is simply here with me in my heart at all times, and when I listen to my heart, I can hear him, and most of my immediate family’s voices in various sonic registers.
This has always been the case.

What I am attempting to describe is what I call The Significance, and why I choose to listen.
::
When we listen — truly listen, at the pace of presence, as I listen to my father’s Significance — we are receiving what has been accumulating across every exchange that shaped the speaker. Consider the potential of that transmission. Dialogue is a vertical encounter: two people meeting in the present, and behind each of them, the full depth of everything that made them who they are. The voice, by nature, is a horizontal idea carrying the potency of time.
A PING TO NOTE
Dad’s voice has meaning in my world via a unique vibration, equivalent to that of other significant elders, family, and friends. Voices able to be here with me at the thump of my heartbeat in their direction. Instantly.

AMSTERDAM · VONDELPARK
My brother and sister rushed our father to the hospital with complications on what was thought to be his last hours on the planet. At the time I was in Amsterdam and on my way to meet a beloved cousin in East Africa. I paused for a day and held a ceremonial honoring of my father for my self at Vondelpark. Had dad passed that day, his funeral would have been the next and I would not have arrived in time to attend.
My brother delivered a video message to me four days after what was meant to be our father’s last, where dad said his last words to me “Hey, Kamau. How ya’ doing? Have a great trip.” A lot of his challenges in his last years were respiratory, and so it was nice to receive those words clearly at his new pace. He had delivered a huge smile to me — voice to heart — after a surprising recovery.
His offer, for me to have a great trip, and my invitational receptivity ceremony to his eternal energy walking with me, turned a 10-day trip to a 47-day integration vipassana designed exclusively for spending time with the Significance of his presence and its vibration in my life while experiencing Africa’s motherland for the first time.
Listening to his words carry us, and hearing their significant resonance in my world are like enjoying that smile on the Atlantic while watching him amongst his human and mammalian family.
The smile radiated joys during discomforts and distance, just as his vocal presence accompanies my life for the remainder of my days as we use our inner voice together.
A wise ignorance peddler once told me that “Hearing is more than words.” This guidance taught me that insight can emerge from ignorance, and that sound can simultaneously be sensational.

WHY LISTEN?
Because the people who have known us longest — and those who no longer walk with us — have been transmitting our name into the future.
Listening is how we receive what they have already sent.

The Listener’s Path is the practice of receiving what is already transmitting. Every issue is a field dispatch from someone learning, in real time, what it means to hear.
Memes are magnetic. Meaning they are meant for the pace and place of our thoughts. The They that you want to send it to has their own.
THIS DISPATCH IS MEANT TO TRAVEL. · PASS IT TO ONE PERSON.
If this issue arrived for someone you know navigating grief, legacy, or the genuine sense that someone they loved is offering big messages — forward it. The Listener’s Path is also for them.
