◎ "Fail fast" costs U.S. businesses $190B in healthcare and $300B in lost productivity — benefficiency offers the different simultaneity

The Invitation
I have participated in some word creation in my history. I was part of a team that coined the term ‘Phygital’ a couple of decades ago — a word created to simplify a big idea merging interactive technology with physical space experiences. KzA (pronounced Kyzza) is simply the sound of my initials when mashed together — needed for when someone feels like my first name, Kamau, is an impossible word to sound.
I thought I had created the word Splendiferous — a playful adjective meaning splendid, magnificent, or extraordinarily impressive — because that is often how I felt in my body and/or about ideas I would meet in my work. Turns out I was simply riding the waves of an existing sensation since Humans have been feeling Splendiferous since at least 1843 according to Merriam-Webster.
Often we need a new name for an old idea, a new idea for a present behavior, or a novel designation for a defined direction, like Northeast :: a novel designation for a defined direction.
Benefficiency is a bit of all three, and here is why.
|
:: |
|
Benefficiency is the quality of efficiency that benefits the whole system rather than optimizing a single measure.
/ben-uh-FISH-en-see/ · n. · KzA lexicon, 2026
I heard this word emerge in my consciousness as my partner and I were watching a Veritasium episode on the 1 billion heartbeat budget that all mammals share.

1,000,000,000 HEARTBEATS?
Allow me to expand on that a bit. Every mammal on Earth — no matter the scale — is operating on a lifetime budget of one billion heartbeats.
A domestic cat, an African elephant, the Etruscan shrew. Different scales of mammals all with the same lifetime heartbeat budget.
|
|
The Etruscan shrew — lighter than a grape, smaller than a thumb — owns a heart that beats 1,200 times per minute (the rhythm of a hummingbird’s wings). Each shrew lives approximately 18 months, arriving at approximately one billion heartbeats.
|
|
The African bush elephant lives at the expansive pace of its legacy. This elephant’s heart beats 30 times per minute. It lives for 70 years. The elephant also arrives at approximately one billion heartbeats per lifetime.
|
|
As for all mammalia.

The concept of Benefficiency emerged because I have been contemplating the mischaracterization of efficiency as a matter of speed. Ideas like “fail fast”, and “moving at the speed of culture” are often applied as blinding mandates designed to disregard care for the human collateral along with deprioritizing cultural impacts of pace — and heightened burnout is a natural result.
This high-paced burn rate is a great result (benefit) for burnout coaches, psychologists, therapists, and mental health practitioners as they are doing quite well catching the toasted human embers of our hyper-efficient behavior.
Conventional efficiency asks: how do we get more from less?
Benefficiency asks: how can more for all emerge from what we have?
Both approaches have answers. Getting more from less costs U.S. businesses around $190 billion in healthcare and $300 billion in lost productivity, absenteeism, and turnover. One study estimates roughly $5 million per year in burnout-related costs for a 1,000-employee firm. (American Institute of Stress / Gallup, 2023)
Benefficiency creates the potential for the different simultaneity.
The average human now lives with nearly three billion heartbeats — a figure we have been climbing toward since the mid-1800s, when germ theory, sanitation, and cities began extending human life systematically. Three centuries ago, we were closer to the mammalian standard of one billion heartbeats. Today we live at the scale of something between an elephant and a whale.
Human beings have been living, growing, and evolving in a collaborative benefficiency which — via our empathetic studies of life-extending and lifestyle expanding practices — has benefited our life scale.
A question that our extra two billion heartbeats may be asking: what are we doing with them?

FIELD NOTES · RESONANCE PROMPTS
Human curiosity is the most accessible Benefficiency engine.
Where in your life are you running the shrew’s tempo on the elephant’s time?
What could one slower, deeper practice offer to your pace and productivity?
What are you building now that is scaling benefit beyond your time-to-goal efforts?

IDEAS FOR THE BENEFFICIENT LIFE
The following are some considerations emerging from my contemplations on Benefficient action:
|
|
01
Curiosity is a benefficiency engine
A question asked with genuine interest multiplies the beneficial encounter for everyone in the room simultaneously. The next time you find yourself with someone whose perspective you respect: fall in love with the learning potential of your question. What is offered will speak volumes to your curiosity’s brilliance.
|
:: |
|
02
Your tempo is information worth hearing
The shrew is running the design it was born with. The question is whether the tempo you are moving at was chosen or inherited. The pace that was handed to you by urgency, by comparison, by the speed of the market — that is the shrew’s tempo borrowed without consent. The Benefficient question: what is the trajectory of my tempo?
|
:: |
|
03
Efficiency that serves only one person in the room is empirically costly
Every hour that deepens a relationship, enhances a practitioner’s capacity, or builds on a collectively beneficial legacy — that is the elephant’s pace. That is the design that compounds.
|
:: |
|
04
The extra two billion heartbeats are an empirical proposal
Humanity are multibillionaires in heartbeat abundance through science, sanitation, and the accumulated investments of every generation that built systems of care. What we do with our billions is a measure that matters. The shrew has no such capacity. We do.
|
|
The shrew lives at the full speed of its scale.
The elephant lives at the expansive pace of its legacy.
We were given the budget of both.
|
:: |
|
Thank you for observing the necessary in the unnecessary on The Listener’s Path. That, too, is benefficiency.
Memes are magnetic. Meaning they are meant for the pace and place of our thoughts. The They that you want to send it to has their own.

THE PRACTICE · 44 MINUTES
If the benefficiency question is what we build with our extra two billion heartbeats, a•i•Contemplation is a practice that renders the question answerable. I designed this practice for my self for those days when I know that an accessible answer exists for long-held challenge. Forty-four minutes with an active intention is a new way to think about AI.

THE NEUROARTS FUND FOR INNERVERSAL HEALTH PRACTITIONERS
If your work lives in sound medicine, somatic integration, steeping arts, narrative self-expression, or innerversal health practice, then this is the moment where your ideas can be supported financially and communally by a collaborative benefficiency already in action. A $10,000 endowment is live and growing for the health of your ideas.

Benefficiency asks: how can more for all emerge from what we have?
The shrew and the elephant expressed the same budget through different designs — one in breaths, one in decades.
Curiosity is an honorable benefficiency engine. The encounter is the design.
The extra two billion heartbeats are the proposal. The question is what we are building with them.
